You can help!

1. ADOPT A PET OR TWO FROM AN ANIMAL SHELTER. Two kittens are a lot more fun than one, and they will keep themselves amused along with you! During Spring, the shelters are overwhelmed with kittens, and cats are such easy keepers! They will grow up together and provide companionship for each other. Shelters

2. ADOPT AN OLDER DOG. Puppies are like babies! They require the same constant attention as babies do. An older dog is much less work! Kiwi, who is 14 years old (yes!) sleeps ALL DAY, ALL NIGHT, asks for the door in the morning when we get up, once in the late afternoon, and pops his head in the kitchen to ask where dinner is around seven p.m! He is really easy and still so cute when he comes to check up on what I am doing. Older dogs are the best!

3. DO NOT PATRONIZE PET SHOPS THAT SELL PUPPIES. But they are SO Cute! The puppies come from puppy mills.  Please read the heartbreaking stories from dogs used as "breeders" in puppy mills. The puppies may be cute, but since they are not raised in normal conditions, they will grow up with various psychological problems and destructive behaviors. These puppies mostly end up in shelters where they are destroyed. www.puppymills.com.

4. PEDIGREE DOGS. If you really want a certain breed, try Petfinder.com. You'll save money, help a homeless pet, and maybe find your special pet after reading some of these stories!

5. BOYCOTT PRODUCTS THAT CAUSE ANIMAL SUFFERING. Go to PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) web site. Read about what PET FOOD really is made of.

6. BECOME A VEGETARIAN. You will if you read "Diet for a New America" by Jon Robbins. It takes 20 acres of land to produce one steer for human consumption, only ONE SIXTH of an acre to feed one vegetarian per year.  This is a direct cause of the destruction of the Rain Forest, and the disappearance of natural habitats for elephants and gorillas and the panda in Asia, elephants and the large nomadic herds of wild animals in Africa.

7.DON'T WEAR FUR or senseless animal products like "lucky" rabbit feet, sealskin wallets and key chains. Don’t use mink oil, feathers. If you love the LOOK of fur, go to www.fabulousfurs.com and read "About Us".

8. FEED YOUR DOG A HEALTHY DIET. Read about the BARF diet (Bones and Raw Food Diet). www.homestead.com/vonhapsburg/petfood.html, www.pet-grub.com

9. GO ORGANIC.If you eat meat, eat organically grass fed animals that haven't been injected with hormones, antibiotics, pesticides. The same goes for your pets. Diseases such as osteoporosis are directly linked to TOO much animal protein in the diet. What about SARS? Read this article on the PETA website.

10. ROOM FOR ONE MORE? I tried to adopt "Sprout" the three pound Yorkie from Petfinders.com. Her story really touched me (She already found a home.) I am seriously thinking about maybe a Kitty or two more? There are so many of them...and people are so mean to cats...and dogs...and horses...pigs...ferrets...birds...
